Helicopter

A helicopter is a kind of aircraft (flying machine). The main difference between a helicopter and an airplane is what lifts them into the sky. An airplane gets its lift from its wings and its thrust, or foward motion, from a propeller or a jet turbine. A helicopter gets its lift and thrust from horizontal rotors (several rotating blades like small wings). For that reason, they are sometimes called rotary wing aircraft.

This means that a helicopter flys differently to how an airplane does. An airplane must move forwards to stay in the air, but a helicopter can stop and hover on the spot while still keeping above the ground. Helicopters move by tilting their rotors, so they push the air below them in a different direction.

Helicopters were first thought of by Leonardo da Vinci in 1490, but it was hundreds of years later (in the early 20th century) before anyone built one that could really fly. Since around 400 BC the Chinese had a flying top that was used as a children's toy, that used the same method of creating lift.

Ganesha is the god of wisdom in Hinduism. He has an elephant's head.

The elephant is the symbol for the United States Republican Party. It is like the Democratic Party's donkey. The first person to use the elephant as a symbol for the Republican Party was Thomas Nast. He did that in a Harper's Weekly cartoon in 1874.

Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社, Yasaka-jinja?), once called Gion Shrine, is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan. Situated at the east end of Shijo-dori (Fourth Avenue), it was built originally in 656. The shrine includes several buildings, including gates, a main hall and a stage.

In 869 the mikoshi (portable shrines) of Gion Shrine were paraded through the streets of Kyoto to ward off an epidemic that had hit the city. This was the beginning of the Gion Matsuri, an annual festival which has become world famous.

Today, in addition to hosting the Gion Matsuri, Yasaka Shrine welcomes thousands of people every New Year, for traditional Japanese New Year rituals and celebrations. In April, the crowds pass through the temple on their way to Maruyama Park, a popular hanami (cherry blossom viewing) site. Lanterns decorate the stage with the names of festival sponsors.

Drop Dead Gorgeous

was a film originally released in 1999. It stars Denise Richards and Kirsten Dunst as contestants in a beauty pageant called the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Mount Rose American Teen Princess Pageant, held in the small town of Mount Rose, Minnesota. The film is a fictitious documentary covering the pageant. The film is based on the novel Civic Beauties by author C.D. Payne.

Plot
Many Mount Rose girls compete in the pageant for something to do. Other contestants, like Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst) want to win the scholarship money so they can leave Mount Rose - in Amber's case, so she can become more like her idol, Diane Sawyer. Rebecca Leeman (Denise Richards) is the daughter of the richest man in town, and her mother Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley) - the head of the pageant organising committee - is a former winner herself. Various business connections between the Leeman Furniture Store and the judges of the pageant (one is an employee) prompt many whispers around town that the contest will be fixed.

Many odd things start happening to people in the run up to the pageant; one of the contestents, Tammy Curry is blown up while riding a tractor while Amber's love interest, Brett Clemmens (Casey Garven), is shot dead in a "hunting accident". Fearing for her life, Amber decides to pull out of the pageant when her mother Annette (Ellen Barkin), is injured during an explosion at their trailer. After a pep-talk with family friend Loretta (Allison Janney), and a heart-to-heart with her mother, Amber reconsiders. At the dress rehearsal a fellow contestant Jenelle Betz (originally contestant number 8), swaps positions with Amber (originally contestant number 1). When Jenelle walks on stage at the beginning of rehearsal to perform her talent piece, a spotlight falls and hits her in the head, knocking her unconscious.

At the pageant (despite her tap costume going missing) Amber performs her tap-dance number to a standing ovation, while Rebecca Leeman sings (appallingly badly) and dances with a Jesus doll on a rolling crucifix. Still, Amber comes second to Rebecca Leeman. At the victory parade the next day, Rebecca Leeman rides in an elaborate swan float, designed by her mother and constructed by her father's Mexican workers. Unfortunately, after Gladys Leeman lights the fireworks at the base of the swan, the entire float catches fire, consuming Rebecca in the flames. In her grief and standing by the burnt-out float, Gladys admits to killing Tammy Curry and, it is assumed, causing the other deaths and injuries in the run-up to the pageant.

After Rebecca's funeral Amber is crowned Mount Rose's American Teen Princess, and goes on to the state competition. At the State Competition Amber wins the Minnesota American Teen Princess title by default after all the other contestants fall ill with seafood-related food poisoning. Amber hadn't eaten any because her mother always said "Don't ever eat nothin' that can carry its house around with it. Who knows the last time it's been cleaned." As winner, Amber gets an all-expenses-paid trip to Alabama, where the national American Teen Princess Pageant is held. On arrival Amber and the other contestants find that the company has been shut down by the IRS, and the distraught girls wreck the forecourt of the shuttered Sarah Rose Cosmetics building, hurling suitcases.

By the end of the film Amber Atkins manages to become a reporter, getting her start by taking over from a local television reporter who was shot during a siege conducted by the newly-released from prison Gladys Leeman, perched atop the local supermarket. The film closes with Amber finishing a nightly news presentation on Minnesota television station

Drop Dead Gorgeous-Characters

Amber Atkins: Contestant #8, formerly contestant #1. A blonde who lives in a trailer park with her mother. Becomes Mount Rose's American Teen Princess after the death of Becky Leeman. Does a tap-dancing act for her talent.

Becky Leeman: Contestant #6. A brunette who is the daughter of the richest family in all of Mount Rose, and the (new) President of the Lutheran Sisterhood Gun Club. Becomes Mount Rose's American Teen Princess, but dies the next day on a swan float which explodes, making Amber the new princess. Sings a song and dances with a Jesus doll on a rolling crucifix as her talent.

Annette Atkins: Amber's alcoholic, but loving mother and best friend. Nearly dies when a bomb is thrown into their trailer, but survives with her hand being melted onto a beer can.

Gladys Leeman: Becky's mother. Former Mount Rose American Teen Princess. In charge of the Mount Rose American Teen Pageant. Admits to killing Tammy Curry and, it is assumed, causing the other deaths and injuries in the run-up to the pageant, after the death of her daughter, Becky.

Lester Leeman: Owner of the Leeman Furniture store, father of Becky and husband of Gladys.

Loretta: Best friend and neighbor of Annette and Amber Atkins. Somewhat promiscuous. Houses Amber after her trailer gets blown up.

Iris Clark: Helper of Gladys in the Mount Rose American Teen Pageant.

Mary Johanson: The reigning Mount Rose American Teen Princess. Suffers from anorexia, and moves around via wheelchair (and a nurse to push her). Lip-synced to "Don't Cry Out Loud" as her talent.

Leslie Miller: A dim-witted blonde cheerleader who competes in the pageant because "I watch the pageants on T.V., and because my boyfriend thinks I'll win." Becomes second runner-up. Performs a cheerleading act for her talent (as two wrestlers wrestle in the foreground).

Lisa Swenson: A dark-haired clumsy girl who "fell in love with the Big Apple" while visiting her brother, who is a drag-queen. Drops out of the pageant at the last minute so Amber can compete, but was supposed to sing and dance to "New York, New York".

Tess Weinhaus: A chubby short-haired girl who has an obsession with dogs, and has gotten her belly remade with skin from her butt after her German Shepherd attacked her. Describes different dog breeds and (poorly) imitates their barks and howls as her talent.

Molly Howard: An American girl adopted by a family of Japanese-Americans. Dresses in clothes that resemble those of the 1950's era, and wears her hair in a style similar to those of the 50's. Considers herself a "Japanese-American" and line-dances for her talent.

Michelle Johnson: A somewhat dark and poetic girl who does a monologue for her talent.

Jenelle Betz: A girl who hopes to spread sign language around the world. Becomes unable to compete in the pageant due to a stage-light that falls on her head, making her unconscious and deaf. Was originally going to do an interpretive dance for her talent.

Tammy Curry: An athletic jock girl who was captain of the girls' varsity soccer team, ran track, and was the president of the Lutheran Sisterhood Gun Club. Dies in an explosion on her father's thresher.

John Dough: Judge #1 of the pageant. An obvious pedophile.

Harold Vilmes: Judge #2 of the pageant. An over-weight hardware store owner.

Jean Kangas: Judge #3 of the pageant. A quiet and anti-social woman who is also Lester's assistant in his furniture store.

Hank Vilmes: Brother of Harold Vilmes. A mentally-challenged man who is often referred to as a "tard" or "retard".

Pat: Boyfriend of Leslie Miller.

Brett Clemmens: Quarterback of the school's football team. Has a crush on Amber Atkins, but is shot in the head before the two begin dating by either Gladys or Becky.

69 (sex position)

The sexual position 69, also known as soixante-neuf (taken from the French for the number), is one of the most commonly known sexual positions. In this position, two people orient themselves such that each person's mouth is near the other's genitals so that they can simultaneously perform oral sex on each other. This can be done lying down, one on top of the other or side by side, or alternatively, one partner can stand while holding the other upside down.

Partners commonly insert a finger into the vagina or anus of the other to provide additional stimulation.

In this position the more sensitive underside of the penis is placed against the top of the receiving partner's mouth rather than against the tongue, thereby creating a sensation different from that of traditional oral sex.

Psychiatric hospital

A psychiatric hospital (also called at various places and times, mental hospital, mental ward, sanitarium or asylum) is a hospital specializing in the treatment of persons with mental illness. Psychiatric wards differ only in that they are a unit of a larger hospital.

Types of psychiatric hospitals
There are a number of different types of modern psychiatric hospitals, but all of them house people with mental problems.

Crisis stabilization
One type is the crisis stabilization unit, which is in effect an emergency room for mental disorders. Involuntary commitment laws in many jurisdictions require a judge to issue a commitment order within a short time (often 72 hours) of the patient's entry to the unit.

Open units
Open units are psychiatric units that are less secure than crisis stabilization units. They are not used for acutely suicidal persons; the focus in these units is to make life as normal as possible for patients while continuing treatment to the point where they can be discharged. However, patients are usually still not allowed to hold their own medications in their rooms, because of the risk of an impulsive overdose. While some open units are still physically unlocked, other open units still use locked entrances and exits. This is to keep patients from escaping, which may be described as "leaving impulsively," or leaving without being discharged from the unit.

Medium-term
Another type of psychiatric hospital is a medium term, which provides care lasting several weeks. Most drugs used for psychiatric purposes take several weeks to take effect, and the main purpose of these hospitals is to watch over the patient while the drugs begin their expected effect and the patient can be discharged.

Juvenile wards
Juvenile wards are sections of psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric wards set aside for children and/or adolescents with mental illness.

These usually consist of anyone aged under 18.

Geriatric wards
Geriatric wards are designed to help treat older adult patients. The staff of these wards are specially trained to deal with older patients.

Long term care facilities
In the UK, at least, long term care facilities are now being replaced with smaller secure units (some within the hospitals listed above). Modern buildings, modern security and locally sited to help with reintegration into society once medication has stabilized the condition. An example of this being the Three Bridges Unit, in the grounds of Hanwell Asylum in West London. However these modern units, have the goal of treatment and rehabilitation back into society within a short time-frame (two or three years) and not all forensic patients treatment can meet this criteria, so the large hospitals mentioned above retain this role.

Halfway houses
One final type of institution for the mentally ill, that is not a hospital, is a community-based halfway house. These houses provide assisted living for patients with mental illnesses for an extended period of time. These institutions are considered to be one of the most important parts of a mental health system by many psychiatrists, although many localities fail to provide sufficient funding for them.

Used as a form of prison
In some countries the mental institution may be used for the incarceration of political prisoners, as a form of oppression .

Anti-psychiatry objections to mental hospitals

Some critics, notably psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Szasz, have objected to calling mental hospitals "hospitals" . Lawrence Stevens has described mental hospitals as "jails" . Michael Foucault is widely known for a comprehensive critique of the use and abuse of the mental hospital system. Erving Goffman coined the term 'Total Institution' for places which took over and confined a person's whole life. The anti-psychiatry movement coming to the fore in the 1960s oppose many of the practices, conditions or existence of mental hospitals. The Consumer/Survivor Movement has often objected to or campaigned against conditions in mental hospitals or their use, voluntarily or involuntarily.

Some anti-psychiatry activists have advocated for the abolition of long-term hospitals for the criminally insane, including on the grounds that those judged not guilty by reason of insanity should not then be indefinitely confined with potentially less legal rights, or on the converse grounds that insanity is not a coherent concept and so should not be a basis for different treatment.

Wii (2006 - Present)

The Wii is Nintendo's seventh-generation video game console. The system's code name was "Revolution", and as with the Nintendo GameCube, this reference appears on the console and its accessories.

The major feature of the Wii console is the console's wireless controller, the Wii Remote, that may be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect motion and rotation in three dimensions. The controller comes with a Nunchuk accessory which provides additional controls, including more motion sensing. The controller also contains a speaker and a rumble device to provide sensory feedback, and can be used to turn the console on and off. The console also features a stand-by mode entitled WiiConnect24, enabling it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while consuming very little electrical power. The console is bundled with a game, Wii Sports, unusual for a games console of its era. In the Japan region, the Wii Sports game is not included with the console but is offered as a standalone title. The Wii has sold over 4 million systems as of February 19, 2007. The Wii, like the Nintendo GameCube, is the smallest and most compact system in its generation. However, it does not have the ability to match certain aspects of its competitors in the peer generation, such as High Definition graphics.

On December 15, 2006, Nintendo announced that it would offer to replace wrist straps for 3.2 million Wii controllers. Consumers reported they were breaking during game play.

By April 2007, the Wall Street Journal declared Nintendo had "become the company to beat in the games business" with the Wii outselling its home system rivals and overshadowing the better selling Nintendo DS portable. Nintendo's profits were up 77% on the fiscal year due to Wii and Nintendo DS sales.

Kyocera Corporation has announced a plan to increase its solar cell production to 500 MW per year in 2010. 500 MW is about three times the 2007 output of 180 MW, and the company will reinforce production bases in Japan, the US, Europe and China, investing a total of about \30 billion through FY2010. Through this production enhancement, Kyocera looks to meet increasing demand across the world for solar cells.

Route 1

National Route 1 (国道1号, Kokudo Ichi-go) is a major highway on the island of Honshu in Japan.

150px-NationalRoute1.png

It connects Chuo-ku, Tokyo in the Kanto region with the city of Osaka, Osaka Prefecture in the Kansai region, passing through the Chubu region en route. It follows the old Tokaido westward from Tokyo to Kyoto, and the old Kyo Kaido from there to Osaka. Between Tokyo and Aichi Prefecture it parallels the Tomei Expressway; from there to Mie Prefecture, the Higashimeihan Expressway, and from Shiga Prefecture to Osaka, the Meishin Expressway. Its total length is 565.4 km. At its Tokyo terminus, it meets National Routes 4, 6, 14, 15, 17, and 20. At its western terminus, it links with Route 2 and other highways.

Route 1 links Tokyo to the important prefectural capitals of Yokohama (Kanagawa Prefecture), Shizuoka, Nagoya (Aichi Prefecture), Otsu (Shiga Prefecture), Kyoto, and Osaka.

For much of its length, Route 1 follows the old Tokaido.

Meishin Expressway

The Meishin Expressway (名神高速道路, Meishin Kosoku-doro) is a toll expressway in Japan. It runs from a junction with the Tomei Expressway in Nagakute, Aichi (outside Nagoya) west to Nishinomiya, Hyogo (between Osaka and Kobe). It is the main road link between Osaka and Nagoya, and, along with the Tomei Expressway, forms the main road link between Osaka and Tokyo. East of the Chugoku Expressway near Osaka, it is part of Asian Highway 1.

The part east of interchange 29 (Yokaichi) is owned by the Central Nippon Expressway Company; the rest is owned by the West Nippon Expressway Company.

The Meishin Expressway was the first expressway in Japan, with a section near Osaka and Kyoto opening July 16, 1963.

The Meishin Expressway parallels the old Nakasendo between Kyoto and Nagoya, now Route 8 and Route 21. The Meihan National Highway is a mostly non-tolled freeway between Osaka and Nagoya, lying further south and built to lower standards. The Second Meishin Expressway is an under-construction route between Osaka and Nagoya, lying between the two other high-speed roads, that will connect to the Second Tomei Expressway (via the Isewangan Expressway) and the Sanyo Expressway. It roughly parallels the old Tokaido (Route 1).

During the Great Hanshin Earthquake of January 17, 1995, the Meishin Expressway was lightly damaged but could only be used by emergency vehicles for weeks after the earthquake. It was the only remaining link between Osaka and Kobe for some time after the quake.
