Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer is a serial killer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s. His identity remains unknown. The Zodiac coined his name in a series of taunting letters he sent to the press. His letters included four cryptograms (or ciphers), three of which have yet to be solved.

The Zodiac murdered five known victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. Others have also been suspected to be Zodiac victims, albeit inconclusively. The lack of consensus about the number of victims, the inability of law enforcement to crack the ciphers, and the fact that several people have inconclusively been portrayed as "persons of interest" or possible suspects, has elicited this case's designation as a perfect crime.

In April 2004, the San Francisco Police Department marked the case "inactive", but reopened it some time before March 2007. The case remains open in other jurisdictions as well.

The victims

Confirmed
Although the Zodiac claimed in letters to newspapers that he murdered as many as 37 people, investigators agree on only seven confirmed victims, two of whom survived. They are:

David Arthur Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16: Shot and killed on December 20, 1968, on Lake Herman Road just within the city limits of Benicia.
Michael Renault Mageau, 19, and Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin, 22: Shot on July 4, 1969, at the Blue Rock Springs Golf Course parking lot on the outskirts of Vallejo; Darlene was DOA at Kaiser Foundation Hospital, while Michael survived.
Bryan Calvin Hartnell, 20, and Cecelia Ann Shepard, 22: Stabbed on September 27, 1969, on what is today locally referred to as "Zodiac Island"at Lake Berryessa in Napa County; Hartnell survived six stab wounds to the back, but Shepard died of her injuries two days later.
Paul Lee Stine, 29: Shot and killed on October 11, 1969, in Presidio Heights in San Francisco.

Suspected
Many others have been identified as potential Zodiac victims, although evidence is inconclusive. Of the following popular suspected victims, none have been confirmed:

Robert Domingos, 18, and Linda Edwards, 17: Shot and killed on June 4, 1963, at a beach near Lompoc. Edwards and Domingos were named as possible Zodiac victims because of specific similarities between their attack and the Zodiac's attack at Lake Berryessa six years later.

Cheri Jo Bates, 18: Stabbed to death and nearly decapitated on October 30, 1966, at Riverside Community College in Riverside. Bates' possible connection to the Zodiac only came to light four years after her murder when San Francisco Chronicle reporter Paul Avery received a tip regarding similarities between the Zodiac killings and the circumstances surrounding Bates' death.

Kathleen Johns, 22: Abducted on March 22, 1970, on Highway 132 by I-580, west of Modesto. Johns escaped from the car of a man who drove her and her infant daughter around on the backroads between Stockton and Patterson for some three hours. After escaping to the police station in Patterson, she saw the Zodiac's wanted poster and identified him as her kidnapper.
Donna Lass, 25: Last seen September 26, 1970, in South Lake Tahoe. A postcard with an ad from Forest Pines condominiums (near Incline Village at Lake Tahoe) pasted on the back was received at the Chronicle on March 22, 1971, and has been interpreted by some as the Zodiac claiming Lass' disappearance as a victim. However, no evidence has ever been uncovered to connect Donna Lass's disappearance with the Zodiac Killer.

Maria von Trapp

Maria Augusta von Trapp (née Kutschera; January 26, 1905 – March 28, 1987) was the stepmother and matriarch of the Trapp Family Singers. Her story and that of her family's escape from the Nazis after the Anschluss was the inspiration for the musical The Sound of Music.

Birth
Maria Kutschera was born in 1905 in Austria on a train going from her parents' village in Tyrol to a hospital in Vienna. She was an orphan by her seventh birthday. She graduated from the State Teachers College for Progressive Education in Vienna at age 18, in 1923. She entered Nonnberg Abbey, a Benedictine (Roman Catholic) convent in Salzburg, intending to become a nun. While still a novice, she was asked to teach one of the seven children of widowed naval commander Georg Ritter von Trapp and his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp. Maria and Georg were married on November 26, 1927.

Trapp lost his fortune in 1935. Previously, it had been safely invested in a bank in London. The Captain, to help Mrs. Lammer, a friend in the banking business, withdrew the money from the English bank and deposited it in Mrs. Lammer's bank, which promptly failed. Austria had been experiencing economic pressure as a result of German pressure and other factors.

To survive, the Trapps sent away most of their servants, moved into the top floor, and rented the empty rooms to students of the Catholic University. The Archbishop sent Father Wasner to stay with them as their chaplain and the family began turning its love of music into a career. After performing at a festival in 1935, they became a popular touring act. Shortly after the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938, the family moved to Italy and then to the United States. The family home became the headquarters of Heinrich Himmler.

Initially calling themselves the Trapp Family Choir, the von Trapps began to perform in the United States and Canada. After an unsuccessful engagement with Charles Wagner, they signed on with F. C. ("Freddie") Schang. Freddie thought the name Trapp Family Choir was too churchy and otherwise "Americanized" their repertoire and at his suggestion, the group changed its name to the Trapp Family Singers. The family, which by then included ten children, became famous in a new context and was soon touring the world. After the war, they founded the Trapp Family Austrian Relief, Inc., which sent hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and clothing to impoverished Austria.

The Trapp family made a series of 78 rpm discs for RCA Victor, some of which were later issued on RCA Camden LPs. There were also a few later recordings released on LPs, including some stereo sessions. The family also made an appearance on an Elvis Presley Christmas record.

Comic-Con International

Comic-Con International: San Diego, commonly known as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con, is an annual multigenre fan convention founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and later the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 by Shel Dorf and a group of San Diegans. It is traditionally a four-day event (Thursday through Sunday—though a four hour preview night on Wednesday is open to guests pre-registered for all four days) held during the summer in San Diego, California, at the San Diego Convention Center. Comic-Con is both the name of the annual event and the common name of the organization.

Comic-Con International also produces two other conventions, WonderCon and the Alternative Press Expo (APE), both held in San Francisco, California. Since 1974, Comic-Con has bestowed its annual Inkpot Award to guests and persons of interest in the industries of popular arts as well as to members of Comic-Con's Board of Directors and convention committee. It is also the home of the Will Eisner Awards.

Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television (as was evident by the three circled figures appearing in Comic-Con's original logo), and related popular arts, the convention has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectible card games, video games and webcomics. The convention is the largest of its kind in the world, filling to capacity the San Diego Convention Center with over 125,000 attendees in 2007. Although Comiket in Tokyo, Japan is four times larger in terms of attendance than Comic-Con, its focus is solely as a gather for the buying, selling, and trading of dōjinshi (self printed comic books and fanzines), somewhat akin to a huge swap meet, and is not a convention in the American sense.

History and organization
The first convention drew 300 people and was held at the U. S. Grant Hotel in 1970. Other locations in the convention's early years included the El Cortez Hotel, University of California, San Diego, and Golden Hall, before being moved to the San Diego Convention center in 1991.The convention is organized by a panel of thirteen board members, sixteen to twenty full-time and part-time workers, and eighty volunteers that assist with different committees. Comic Con International is a not-for-profit organization, and proceeds of the event go to funding Alternative Press Expo (APE) and WonderCon. The convention is currently scheduled to remain in San Diego until 2012.

After her death, Jackson moved into his grandparents' house with his eight aunts and uncles. He recalls, "My grandmother told me, 'Your mother's not coming home. She's not gonna come back to pick you up. You're gonna stay with us now.' That's when I started adjusting to the streets a little bit". Jackson grew up with his younger cousin, Michael Francis, who earned the nickname "25 Cent" for being his younger counterpart. Francis raps under the stage name "Two Five".

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Margaret "Maggie" Ruth Gyllenhaal (born November 16, 1977) is an American actress. She is the daughter of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, and the older sister of Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal began her acting career in a film directed by her father, and later achieved recognition in her own right playing her real-life brother's on-screen sister in the cult hit Donnie Darko. Gyllenhaal made her breakthrough in the sadomasochistic romance, Secretary, for which she received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination. Gyllenhaal has chosen an eclectic range of roles, from indie films such as Sherrybaby, for which she was also nominated for a Golden Globe, to the romantic comedy Trust the Man and big-budget studio films such as World Trade Center and The Dark Knight.

Gyllenhaal is a politically active Democrat and like her brother and parents supports the American Civil Liberties Union. Gyllenhaal participated in anti-war demonstrations in the lead-up to the US-led invasion of Iraq and achieved some notoriety for being quoted as saying America was "responsible in some way" for the 9/11 attacks.

Maggie Gyllenhaal
Maggie Gyllenhaal, 2004

Biography

Early life
Gyllenhaal was born in New York City, the daughter of film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and film producer and screenwriter Naomi Achs. Jake Gyllenhaal, her brother, is also an actor, and her brother in the film Donnie Darko. Gyllenhaal's father was raised in the Swedenborgian religion and is a descendant of the Swedish noble Gyllenhaal family; her last Swedish ancestor was her great-great-grandfather, Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal. Her mother is from a New York City Jewish-American family, and is the ex-wife of Eric Foner, a history professor at Columbia University.

Gyllenhaal grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from the Harvard-Westlake prep school. While there, she attended a semester away program in Vershire, Vermont called The Mountain School. She graduated from Columbia University in 1999 with a BA in literature and Eastern religions and spent a summer studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Career
Gyllenhaal's first film roles were directed by her father: Waterland (1992), her feature film debut, A Dangerous Woman (1993), and Homegrown (1998); the latter two also featured her brother. After graduating from college, she had a number of supporting roles, in such films as 40 Days and 40 Nights, Riding in Cars with Boys and Cecil B. DeMented. Paper magazine has described these roles, including her casting as Donnie Darko's sister opposite real-life brother Jake, as "the girl you're not supposed to notice".

Gyllenhaal's break-out role was in the black comedy Secretary (2002), a film about two people who embark on a mutually fulfilling BDSM lifestyle. The film earned Gyllenhaal widespread acclaim including a Golden Globe nomination, and marked the first time Gyllenhaal performed full frontal nudity on camera.Although impressed with the script, Gyllenhaal initially had some qualms about doing the film, which she believed could deliver an antifeminist message. But after carefully discussing the script with the film's director, Steven Shainberg, she agreed to join the project. Although insisting Shainberg did not exploit her, Gyllenhaal has said she felt "slightly taken advantage of" and in agreeing to do certain scenes she "conceded in a way that maybe in retrospect I wish I hadn't."

In 2003, Gyllenhaal then had a series of supporting roles in films such as the Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman comedy Adaptation., and Mona Lisa Smile starring Julia Roberts. She also appeared in smaller independent films such as John Sayles's Casa de los Babys, and Criminal with John C. Reilly and Diego Luna.Another notable appearance was in Happy Endings in which she played a singer. She further recorded songs for the movie's soundtrack. The following year, Gyllenhaal was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She also played a love interest of Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell, in Stranger Than Fiction.

Gyllenhaal has also appeared in theatre. She starred as Alice in the Mark Taper Forum production of Patrick Marber's Closer, and performed at the Taper in a production of Tony Kushner's Homebody/ Kabul. Kushner gave Gyllenhaal the role in Homebody/ Kabul on the strength of her performance in Closer.

Gyllenhaal shot a commercial for Rock the Vote, and along with her brother Jake Gyllenhaal, visited the University of Southern California to encourage students to vote during the 2004 U.S. Election. Besides acting, she has modeled for Miu Miu, Reebok and Agent Provocateur, and was the first person to record the first unabridged audiobook version of Sylvia Plath's novel, The Bell Jar.

In 2008, Gyllenhaal was also set to play "Suky" in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee but pulled out before filming began. She has been replaced by Maria Bello. She appeared in The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins, in which she replaced Katie Holmes as Assistant District Attorney, Rachel Dawes.

Personal life
Gyllenhaal has been in a relationship with actor Peter Sarsgaard since 2002.They announced their engagement in April 2006. They have a daughter, Ramona, born on October 4, 2006, and reside in Brooklyn, New York.Sarsgaard is close friends with Gyllenhaal's brother Jake.

In November 2007, Gyllenhaal volunteered to help raise funds for TrickleUp.org, a non-profit organization that helps people take the first steps out of poverty by helping them start a microenterprise. In the latest fundraising campaign, Gyllenhaal helped design and promote a necklace that sells for $100, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Controversy
Gyllenhaal drew fire for a comment made during an interview with NY1 at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival where she suggested that the United States was somewhat responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks. She remarked, "I think America has done reprehensible things and is responsible in some way..." In response to the criticism, she issued a statement saying that 9/11 was "an occasion to be brave enough to ask some serious questions about America's role in the world" and that it was "useful as individuals or nations to ask how we may have knowingly or unknowingly contributed to this conflict." She pointedly denied saying that the 9/11 attacks were deserved. Gyllenhaal later said that she regretted her comments, and asserted that film interviews were not the "right place" to discuss politics.Gyllenhaal also said that she had "nothing but gratitude and admiration" for firefighters and that she should have "been more gentle and more thoughtful" in her comments.

Gyllenhaal eventually met with Port Authority officer Will Jimeno and his wife, Allison, whom Gyllenhaal depicted in the 2006 film World Trade Center. She said she would have left the project if the Jimenos wanted, but Allison Jimeno expressed that she and her husband were comfortable with her and "had no problem with her in [the] movie."

Solar cells
Kyocera Corporation has announced a plan to increase its solar cell production to 500 MW per year in 2010. 500 MW is about three times the 2007 output of 180 MW, and the company will reinforce production bases in Japan, the US, Europe and China, investing a total of about \30 billion through FY2010. Through this production enhancement, Kyocera looks to meet increasing demand across the world for solar cells.

Wii (2006 - Present)

The Wii is Nintendo's seventh-generation video game console. The system's code name was "Revolution", and as with the Nintendo GameCube, this reference appears on the console and its accessories.

The major feature of the Wii console is the console's wireless controller, the Wii Remote, that may be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect motion and rotation in three dimensions. The controller comes with a Nunchuk accessory which provides additional controls, including more motion sensing. The controller also contains a speaker and a rumble device to provide sensory feedback, and can be used to turn the console on and off. The console also features a stand-by mode entitled WiiConnect24, enabling it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while consuming very little electrical power. The console is bundled with a game, Wii Sports, unusual for a games console of its era. In the Japan region, the Wii Sports game is not included with the console but is offered as a standalone title. The Wii has sold over 4 million systems as of February 19, 2007. The Wii, like the Nintendo GameCube, is the smallest and most compact system in its generation. However, it does not have the ability to match certain aspects of its competitors in the peer generation, such as High Definition graphics.

On December 15, 2006, Nintendo announced that it would offer to replace wrist straps for 3.2 million Wii controllers. Consumers reported they were breaking during game play.

By April 2007, the Wall Street Journal declared Nintendo had "become the company to beat in the games business" with the Wii outselling its home system rivals and overshadowing the better selling Nintendo DS portable. Nintendo's profits were up 77% on the fiscal year due to Wii and Nintendo DS sales.

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek Jiménez (born September 2, 1966) is a Mexican actress, director, television and film producer. Hayek has appeared in more than thirty films and performed as an actress outside of Hollywood in Mexico and Spain. Hayek's charitable work includes increasing awareness on violence against women and discrimination against immigrants.

Hayek is the first Mexican national to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. She is also, after Fernanda Montenegro, the second of four Latinas to achieve a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

In July 2007, The Hollywood Reporter ranked Hayek fourth in their inaugural Latino Power 50, a list of the most powerful members of the Hollywood Latino community. That same month, a poll found Hayek to be the "sexiest celebrity" out of a field of 3,000 celebrities (male and female); according to the poll, "65 percent of the U.S. population would use the term 'sexy' to describe her".

Early life
Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, the daughter of Diana Jiménez, an opera singer and talent scout, and Sami Hayek, an oil company executive. Hayek's father is of Lebanese descent while her mother is of Spanish descent. Raised in a wealthy, devoutly Catholic family, she was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, Louisiana, at the age of twelve. She was also an accomplished gymnast aspiring to compete in the Olympics but her father prevented her from being recruited by the Mexican national team. The religious sisters running the Academy ejected Hayek citing behavioral problems, so she returned to Mexico. She was later sent to live with her aunt in Houston, Texas, where she stayed until she was seventeen. She attended college in Mexico City, where she studied International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana. To the surprise of her family, she dropped out to pursue a career as an actress.

Omikuji

Omikuji (御御籤, 御神籤, or おみくじ) are random fortunes written on strips of paper at Shinto shrines in Japan.

Literally "sacred lottery", these are usually received by pulling one out randomly from a box that one shakes, hoping for the resulting fortune to be good. The omikuji falls out of a small hole, scrolled up. (Nowadays, these are sometimes coin-slot machines.) Unrolling the piece of paper reveals the fortune written on it, which can be any one of the following:

Great blessing (dai-kichi, 大吉)
Middle blessing (chū-kichi, 中吉)
Small blessing (shō-kichi, 小吉)
Blessing (kichi, 吉)
Half-blessing (han-kichi, 半吉)
Near-blessing (sue-kichi, 末吉)
Near-small-blessing (sue-shō-kichi, 末小吉)
Curse (kyō, 凶)
Small curse (shō-kyō, 小凶)
Half-curse (han-kyō, 半凶)
Near-curse (sue-kyō, 末凶)
Great curse (dai-kyō, 大凶)

The omikuji predicts the person's chances of his or her hopes coming true, of finding a good match, or generally matters of health, fortune, life, etc. When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree in the temple grounds. A purported reason for this custom is a pun on the word for pine tree (松 matsu) and the verb 'to wait' (待つ matsu), the idea being that the bad luck will wait by the tree rather than attach itself to the bearer. In the event of the fortune being good, the bearer should keep it. Though nowadays this custom seems more of a children's amusement, omikuji are available at most shrines, and remain one of the traditional activities related to shrine-going, if lesser.

Compare perhaps the custom of writing a prayer on a specially-prepared wooden block called an ema, which is then tied to an ad hoc scaffold.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is a 2008 American superhero film co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is a sequel to Batman Begins (2005), which rebooted the Batman film series after an eight-year hiatus. Christian Bale reprises the lead role. Batman's primary conflicts in the film include his fight against the Joker (Heath Ledger) and his strained friendship with district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).

For his conception of the film, Nolan was inspired by the Joker's first two appearances in the comics and Batman: The Long Halloween. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago (as was Batman Begins), as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. The director used an IMAX camera to film six major action sequences, including the Joker's first appearance in the film. The Batsuit was redesigned, with a cowl allowing Bale to move his head. The film also introduces a recreation of the Batcycle, known as the Batpod.

Warner Bros. created an aggressive viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screenshots of Heath Ledger as the Joker. After Ledger's death in January 2008, however, the studio refocused its promotional campaign. The film was released on July 16, 2008 in Australia, on July 18, 2008 in North America, and will be released on July 24, 2008 in the United Kingdom.

Plot
The movie begins with the Joker robbing a mob owned bank, and double crossing his accomplices. That night, multiple Batman impersonators interrupt a meeting between mobsters and the Scarecrow. The real Batman shows up and subdues everyone, but injuries suffered during the confrontation force him to create a new, more functional suit of armor. The mob bosses meet to discuss how to handle Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent, while a Chinese mobster, Lau, lets the mob leaders know he's taken their money to Hong Kong to prevent the police and the district attorney from seizing it in an imminent bank raid. The Joker arrives and propositions to kill Batman for them, and also tries to convince them that Lau will give them all up to the police if he is caught.

After Batman delivers Lau to the police, the mobsters agree to pay the Joker half of their money in return for killing Batman. The Joker tells all of Gotham that if the Batman does not turn himself in to the police, then he will kill innocent people every day. When the Joker begins killing off public officials, Dent pretends to be Batman in order to draw the Joker out of hiding. The Joker attempts to kill Dent during transport, but Gordon and Batman arrive in time to stop and arrest him. With the Joker in custody, Batman interrogates the Joker until he reveals that Rachel and Dent have been taken to opposite sides of the city, and one will die. Batman speeds off to save Rachel, while Gordon and the police head after Dent. Unknown to either of them, the Joker has told them the wrong locations for each person, so Batman is heading for Dent, and Gordon for Rachel. Back at the police station, the Joker manages to escape.

Dent and Rachael awaken to find themselves tied to chairs with barrels of explosive material surrounding them. Harvey attempts to free himself, but accidentally immerses the left side of his face in turpentine when he falls on the floor. Batman arrives and rescues Dent just as the Joker detonates both buildings; the left side of Harvey's face is burned during the explosion. Gordon does not make it to Rachel in time, who dies in the explosion. In the hospital, Harvey is driven to madness over the loss of Rachel, and blames Batman, Gordon and the Joker. The Joker sets up another elaborate plan, first he convinces Harvey to exact revenge on those responsible for Rachel's death. Later, he plants explosives on two ferries and gives the passengers on board the chance to destroy the opposing vessel in order to save their own lives.

While Harvey confronts the corrupt cops and the mobsters one by one, flipping a coin to decide their fates, the Joker declares that he will rule the streets and that anyone left in Gotham will be subject to his rule. Batman discovers the Joker's location at an unfinished skyscraper, and prevents him from blowing up the two ferries. The Joker acknowledges that Batman really is incorruptible, but that he has unleashed Dent's madness upon the city. Batman finds Gordon and his family with Dent at the building where Rachel died. As Dent threatens to kill Gordon's family to pay for the death of Rachel, Batman convinces Harvey to judge him first for not saving Rachel. Harvey's coin lands on the scratched side, and he shoots Batman. Dent focuses his attention back to Gordon's son, and flips the coin again. Before he can determine the boy's fate Batman tackles him over the side of the building. Dent falls to his supposed death and Batman saves Gordon's son. Batman and Gordon decide that the Joker would win if anyone found out about Dent's corruption and madness. In order to uphold Dent's vision, Batman convinces Gordon to blame all of Dent's murders on him. Batman returns to his status as an illegal vigilante to preserve Dent's image as Gotham's hero. As Gordon destroys the batsignal, a manhunt is issued for Batman.
